Španjola Fortress, Hvar
Hvar, Croatia, Croatia
Španjola Fortress, also known as Fortica Fortress, is a historic hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Hvar on Hvar Island, Croatia.
Built during Venetian rule in the 16th century on the site of earlier medieval fortifications, it was designed to protect the town and its harbor from attacks by pirates and the Ottoman Empire. The fortress played a crucial role in safeguarding the local population, notably during the Ottoman attack on Hvar in 1571, when residents took refuge within its walls.
Although it suffered damage from a gunpowder explosion caused by a lightning strike in 1579, it was later rebuilt and strengthened. Today, Španjola Fortress is one of Hvar’s most famous landmarks. Visitors come to explore its historic stone walls, view collections of ancient artifacts and amphorae, and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Hvar Town, the Pakleni Islands, and the Adriatic Sea.
