Starigrad Fortress
Croatia, Croatia
Starigrad Fortress, also known as Fortica, is a 15th-century fortress perched high above the town of Omiš on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast.
It was built during the Croatian–Ottoman wars to protect local residents from Ottoman attacks and served as a refuge and defensive stronghold in times of danger. Situated about 262 meters above sea level, the fortress includes sturdy stone walls, a watchtower, a bastion, and fortified entrance defenses.
Its elevated position gave defenders excellent visibility over the surrounding land and sea approaches. Today, Starigrad Fortress is one of the most popular landmarks in the Omiš area. Visitors hike up to the fortress to explore its historic remains and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea, the Cetina River, and the surrounding mountains.
