The Shit Museum
Italy, Italy
The Shit Museum (Museo della Merda) is an unusual and thought-provoking museum located in Castelbosco, near Piacenza, that explores how animal waste can be transformed into useful resources.
Opened in 2015 by agricultural entrepreneur Gianantonio Locatelli, it combines art, science, sustainability, and agriculture to challenge visitors’ perceptions of waste and recycling. The museum features exhibits on the historical and cultural uses of manure, contemporary artworks, fossilized dung, biogas production, and even everyday objects made from processed bovine manure.
Housed within a working dairy farm and historic estate, it promotes the idea that waste can become a valuable resource through innovation and environmental responsibility.
