Torre della Bajona o delle Ore
Bormio, Italy, Italy
Torre della Bajona, also known as the Torre delle Ore (Clock Tower), is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the historic center of Bormio, Lombardy.
Dating back to the medieval period and standing in Piazza Cavour, it originally served as part of the town’s defensive system and later became an important civic symbol. The tower takes its name from the “Bajona,” a large bell that once summoned residents to public meetings, marked important events, and warned of dangers such as fires or enemy attacks.
The original bell was destroyed during the Visconti invasion of 1376, and the bells heard today were cast from its remains. Today, the restored tower is admired for its historic clock, distinctive architecture, and connection to Bormio’s civic history. As one of the town’s most important monuments, it remains a symbol of the community and a focal point of the charming old town.
