Torre di Pian dell'Isola
Italy, Italy
Torre di Pian dell'Isola is a medieval tower located near Rignano sull’Arno in Tuscany, not far from Florence.
Built around the 12th or 13th century, it originally served as a watchtower overlooking the Arno Valley and may have helped control movement across the river and surrounding countryside. The tower is constructed mainly of sandstone and still preserves important medieval features, including sections of original masonry, decorative arches, and defensive architectural elements.
Over time, it was incorporated into a larger residential complex and transformed from a military structure into a noble residence. Today, the tower remains a notable historic landmark that reflects the region’s medieval past. Although it is privately owned, its exterior can still be admired as an example of Tuscany’s fortified rural architecture and long history of local defense and settlement.
