Torre di Samolaco
San Pietro, Italy, Italy
Torre di Samolaco, often known as the Culumbée Tower, is a historic medieval tower located in the village of San Pietro di Samolaco in Lombardy’s Valchiavenna area.
Believed to date from the late Middle Ages, the square stone structure rises about 15 meters and may have served as a lookout, signal tower, or small defensive post along important routes connecting the region to Lake Como. Local tradition links the tower to legends, including a story that Emperor Frederick Barbarossa stayed there during the 12th century.
Over the centuries, the building was modified and used as a residence and later as a storage structure before falling into disrepair. Carefully restored between 2007 and 2008, the tower now houses a small ethnographic and photographic museum that showcases the history, traditions, and daily life of the Samolaco area. Today it stands as one of the village’s most distinctive historical landmarks.
