Torre Matilde - Viareggio
Viareggio, Province of Lucca, Italy, Italy
Torre Matilde is the oldest surviving building in Viareggio and one of the city's most important landmarks.
Built between 1534 and 1542 by the Republic of Lucca, it was designed as a defensive tower to protect the harbor, warehouses, and growing settlement from pirate attacks and other threats along the coast. The tower served various roles throughout its history, including a military outpost, lookout point, prison, and communications station.
After extensive restoration, Torre Matilde was reopened as a cultural venue. Today it hosts exhibitions and events, while standing as a symbol of Viareggio’s maritime heritage and centuries-old history.
