Verified Troostembergbos

Tielt-Winge, Belgium, Belgium

The Troostembergbos is a nature reserve and forest in the municipality of Tielt‑Winge in the Hageland region of Flemish Brabant, Belgium, covering 54 hectares of dry, sloping woodland dominated by old beeches, with some sweet chestnuts and birches.

The name refers to the noble family de Troostembergh, which owned the estate until 1981, and the area is managed today by the Flemish Agency for Nature and Forest (Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos) as part of the Natura 2000 site “Valleien van de Winge en de Motte met valleihellingen” and is protected as a European conservation area.

It is a popular, easily accessible hiking destination with comfortable paths, picnic tables, a shelter, a children’s playground and a large dog‑exercise zone, and it is often combined with the neighbouring Walenbos (a larger, wilder, wetter woodland) and local landmarks such as the castle de Troostembergh and the historic Gempemolen watermill, a 13th‑century site now used as a restaurant and brewery.

Visitors can walk along the Hagelandse Heuvels (Hageland Hills) network, use the marked trails and routes, and even stay overnight in the bivak zone on the edge of the forest, making the Troostembergbos a well‑used, family‑friendly forest park that offers a mix of nature, history and gentle recreation in the heart of the Hageland landscape.
