University of Fort Hare
Alice, South Africa, South Africa
The University of Fort Hare is a public university located in Alice, a historic town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, situated near the Tyhume River on the site of a former British military station.
Founded in 1916 as the South African Native College, it became the first higher education institution in the country for black South Africans, though it was open to all races and genders. The university is widely recognized as one of Africa's most prestigious institutions and earned the Eastern Cape its reputation as "the cradle of intellectual freedom" due to its role as a key meeting point for intellectuals during apartheid.
Notable alumni include Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, Robert Sobukwe, and Mangosuthu Buthelezi, all of whom played significant roles in South Africa's liberation movement. The university offers five faculties—Education, Law, Management & Commerce, Science & Agriculture, and Social Sciences & Humanities—with qualifications up to doctoral level, and maintains three campuses in Alice, Bhisho, and East London.
