Utvrda Gvozdansko
Gvozdansko, Croatia, Croatia
Utvrda Gvozdansko is a medieval fortress located in the village of Gvozdansko in central Croatia.
Built in the 15th century by the powerful Zrinski noble family, it served as both a defensive stronghold and a center for mining, metal smelting, and coin minting, making it an important economic and military site. The fortress is best known for the heroic Siege of Gvozdansko in 1577-1578, when a small force of Croatian defenders resisted a much larger Ottoman army for months.
The siege ended only after the exhausted defenders froze to death during an extremely harsh winter, earning the fortress a special place in Croatian history. Today, the ruins of Gvozdansko Castle remain a powerful historical landmark surrounded by forests and hills. Visitors come to explore its remains and learn about one of the most dramatic episodes of Croatia’s medieval past.
