Utvrda Novigrad - Fortica
Novigrad, Croatia, Croatia
Utvrda Novigrad - Fortica is a medieval fortress that stands on a hill above the town of Novigrad in Zadar County, Croatia.
Built on the site of earlier Illyrian and Roman fortifications, it was extensively rebuilt in the 13th century and became an important stronghold for controlling the surrounding region. The fortress played a significant role in Croatian history and is especially known as the place where Queen Mary of Hungary and Croatia and her mother Elizabeth of Bosnia were imprisoned in 1386 during a political conflict.
Over the centuries, it was strengthened by the Venetian Republic and withstood numerous military threats, including Ottoman attacks. Today, Fortica survives as an impressive ruin offering panoramic views of Novigrad Sea, the town below, and the nearby Velebit Mountains. Its dramatic setting, centuries of history, and well-preserved remains make it one of the most notable historical attractions in the area.
