The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, located in Roodepoort near Johannesburg, South Africa, covers nearly 300 hectares and was officially established in 1982, becoming one of the country’s national botanical gardens.

It is well known for its stunning natural setting around the Roodekrans hill, where alternating layers of quartz and shale create a dramatic backdrop. The garden conserves the local “Rocky Highveld Grassland” vegetation and hosts over 600 indigenous plant species, including large collections of succulents such as lithops, cycads, and rare endangered species.

The site is also a haven for wildlife, with more than 220 bird species recorded, including the famous Verreaux's eagles, as well as reptiles, small mammals, and antelope. Visitors can explore a network of walking trails, enjoy views of the Sasol Dam, and use facilities like bird hides, picnic areas, and guided tours. The garden combines conservation, research, education, and recreation, offering a peaceful and biodiverse escape just outside the urban center of Johannesburg.
