The castle's history dates back to the 10th century, with the present building primarily constructed in the 15th century. It is especially known for its picturesque setting with a lake, park, and one of the oldest surviving wrought iron suspension bridges in Europe, designed in 1824 by engineer Jean-Baptiste Vifquain.

The castle underwent major renovations in the 19th and 20th centuries, embracing a neo-Gothic architectural style. For over a century, the influential Vilain XIIII family lived here, with many family members serving as Bazel's mayors. The castle, gatehouse, suspension bridge, and pigeon tower have all been protected monuments since 1981, and the municipality of Kruibeke has managed its restoration since 1989.
