Aalborghus Castle
Aalborg, Denmark, Denmark
Aalborghus Castle is a historic Renaissance castle located in the center of Aalborg, overlooking the Limfjord in northern Denmark.
Built between 1539 and 1555 by King Christian III, it was originally intended as a fortress but soon became the residence and administrative center for the king’s representatives in North Jutland. The castle is known for its distinctive half-timbered architecture, whitewashed walls, and red wooden framing.
Over the centuries, additional wings and granaries were added, although only part of the original structure remains today. Today, Aalborghus serves mainly administrative functions, but visitors can explore its courtyard, historic grounds, and castle park. During the summer, the old dungeons and underground casemates are also accessible, offering a glimpse into the castle’s long and fascinating history.
