Vallø Castle

Denmark, Denmark

---

Vallø Castle is a historic manor castle located near Køge on the Danish island of Zealand.

Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, and the present castle largely took shape during the late 16th century. The impressive four-winged building, surrounded by a moat and distinctive towers, is considered one of Denmark’s finest Renaissance-era estates. The castle has strong royal connections and became especially notable in 1737 when Queen Sophia Magdalene established the Vallø Foundation, a residence and support institution for women of noble birth.

This unique tradition continues in a modern form today. Although the castle itself is generally not open to the public, visitors can enjoy its beautiful surroundings, including a landscaped park with romantic gardens, woodlands, and historic buildings. Vallø Castle remains an important landmark that combines architectural beauty, royal history, and Danish cultural heritage.
