Akhtala Fortress
Armenia, Armenia
Akhtala Fortress, also known as Pghindzavank (Coppermine Monastery) after the nearby copper mine, is a fortified monastery complex in the town of Akhtala in the Lori Province of northern Armenia, about 186 km north of Yerevan and 62 km north of Vanadzor on the left bank of the Debed River at the foot of the Lalvar mountain.
The fortress was built in the 10th century by the Kyurikian branch of the Bagratuni dynasty as part of medieval Armenia’s defensive system, controlling the passage through the Debed gorge and the main road to Georgia, and is situated on a high plateau surrounded by deep canyons on three sides, with the fourth side protected by thick walls and towers.
The only entrance is on the northern side, where a large vaulted hall with a three‑story pyramid‑shaped tower serves as the main gate, and the fortress walls, built from bluish basalt with lime mortar, stretch along the entire cliff perimeter, giving the site an impregnable appearance that blends with the natural landscape.
Inside the fortress walls are the main church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Trinity or Holy Mother of God), built in the 13th century, a small church of St. Basil, several chapels, the ruins of a two‑story residential complex, and the remains of the monastery’s other structures, making it one of the largest Chalcedonite (non‑Gregorian) monasteries in Armenia, historically associated with Greek and Georgian Christians and later with the Armenian Apostolic Church.
