Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Sofia, Bulgaria

---

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia is one of Bulgaria’s most famous landmarks and among the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world.

Built in the Neo-Byzantine style between 1882 and 1912, it was dedicated to the Russian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, which helped liberate Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The cathedral is renowned for its magnificent gold-plated domes, richly decorated interior, marble and onyx details, impressive mosaics, and large bell tower.

It can accommodate around 5,000 worshippers and serves as the cathedral church of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Located in the heart of Sofia, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is both a major religious center and a symbol of the Bulgarian capital. Its crypt houses an outstanding collection of Orthodox icons, making the cathedral one of the country’s most important cultural, historical, and architectural attractions.
