Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, located in Plovdiv, is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the world and one of Bulgaria’s most important archaeological landmarks.

Built during the reign of Emperor Trajan in the early 2nd century AD, it was part of the ancient city of Philippopolis, the Roman predecessor of modern Plovdiv. The theatre could accommodate between 5,000 and 7,000 spectators and was used for theatrical performances, public gatherings, and civic events. Its marble seating, stage buildings, and architectural details have survived remarkably well, making it a rare example of ancient Roman engineering and design.

Today, Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis remains an active cultural venue, hosting concerts, operas, and festivals against the backdrop of Plovdiv’s historic hills. Combining historical significance, excellent preservation, and stunning views, it is one of the city's most iconic attractions.
