Basilica del Voto Nacional
Quito, Pichincha Province, Ecuador
The Basilica del Voto Nacional in Quito, Ecuador, is the largest neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas, renowned for its impressive size and intricate design. Construction began in 1883, inspired by European Gothic cathedrals like Notre-Dame, and was led by French architect Emilio Tarlier.
The basilica stretches about 140 meters long, with twin towers rising 115 meters high, making it a dominant feature in Quito's skyline. Inside, the church features soaring vaulted ceilings, large stained-glass windows, and 24 chapels dedicated to Ecuador’s provinces. Uniquely, its exterior is adorned with gargoyles shaped like Ecuadorian animals such as iguanas and armadillos, blending local culture with traditional Gothic elements.
Although officially consecrated in 1988, the basilica remains technically unfinished, linked to a local legend that claims the world will end if construction is ever completed. Visitors can climb the towers for panoramic views of the city, making the basilica not only a religious site but also a major architectural and cultural landmark in Quito.
