Reserva Chakana- Hacienda Antisanilla
Ecuador, Ecuador
Reserva Chakana–Hacienda Antisanilla is a 7,000-acre (about 12,000 acres total private reserve) protected area in the Ecuadorian Andes, located just over an hour from Quito in the Pichincha province, that serves as Ecuador's most important sanctuary for the Andean Condor.
Established in 2011 as Antisanilla Reserve and renamed Chakana in 2019 to avoid confusion with the nearby Antisana Ecological Reserve, it was officially declared a Condor Sanctuary in 2012 after up to 40 condors were recorded roosting on its cliffs, representing a crucial portion of Ecuador's estimated 150 wild condors.
The reserve protects high-altitude páramo ecosystem ranging from 10,000 to 12,000 feet above sea level and is part of a larger conservation mosaic that includes Antisana Ecological Reserve, Sumaco Napo Galeras National Park, and Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve.
