Parque Etnobotánico Omaere
Puyo, Pastaza, Ecuador, Ecuador
The Parque Etnobotánico Omaere is a 15‑hectare forest reserve and botanical park in the outskirts of Puyo, in the Pastaza province of eastern Ecuador, situated along the Paseo Turístico del Río Puyo in the Barrio Obrero neighborhood.
Created in 1993 by a Shuar woman and two French women through the Fundación Omaere, it is one of the first ethnobotanical parks in Latin America and focuses on preserving native Amazonian plants that are important for food, medicine, construction, and rituals, while also safeguarding the traditional knowledge of Shuar and Waorani cultures.
About 5 hectares of the park conserve primary rainforest, and the rest has been reforested into secondary forest, with around 100 identified plant species plus orchids and other humid‑premontane flora, and visitors can walk nature trails, see traditional houses of different Amazonian nationalities, and learn about sustainable use of the forest and indigenous heritage, entering for a small admission fee during daily opening hours.
