Burg Altgrafenstein
Austria, Austria
Burg Altgrafenstein, also known as Burg Lerchenau, is the ruin of a medieval hill castle on a narrow, rocky ridge to the south of Grafenstein in the town of Grafenstein, Carinthia, Austria, and it served as the ancestral seat of the noble family of the Grafensteiner, from whom the town’s name and later development ultimately grew.
First mentioned in a document in 1158, the castle was built in a Romanesque style on a steep rock spur that is only accessible from one side, and its core consists of a compact, roughly rectangular stone building with a small tower and surrounding walls, while later additions added a more extensive residential area and outer defenses.
