Burg Hartenstein
Austria, Austria
Burg Hartenstein is a high medieval hill castle in the small Kremstal valley of Lower Austria, perched on a steep rock about 70 meters high above a bend in the Kleine Krems river near the municipality of Weinzierl am Walde, roughly 15 kilometers west of Krems.
It was probably built in the second half of the 12th century, with the first documentary mention in 1187 of a “Heinricus de Hertensteine” associated with the Kuenringer noble family, and it remained in the hands of the Kuenringer and later the Herren von Maissau and various other owners, always on a high rocky spur that made it very difficult to attack and reportedly never successfully conquered.
In the 17th century the castle began to decline as its owners preferred more comfortable residences, and by the 19th century the main castle was largely a ruin; in 1892–1896 the lower forecastle was converted into a large cold‑water clinic and spa with bathing cabins, a swimming hall, and a winter garden, a facility that operated until 1938, while the upper castle remained mostly as a ruin surrounded by hospital buildings.
After the clinic closed, the site was eventually acquired in 1993 by Peter Kotauczek and his company BEKO, which modernized parts of the buildings and integrated them into its corporate headquarters, and today Burg Hartenstein is a striking example of a partially preserved medieval castle combined with a 19th‑century spa complex, admired from the outside and accessible on guided tours and events, but not a fully open tourist attraction like a museum.
