Burg Mauterndorf
Mauterndorf, Austria, Austria
Burg Mauterndorf is a medieval castle in the Austrian state of Salzburg, first mentioned in 1253 and built by the archbishops of Salzburg on the site of an earlier Roman fort.
It served as a toll station on the Via Imperialis trade route across the Alps where travelers paid tolls. Over the centuries, it was fortified and extended, especially under archbishops Burkhard Weisbriach and Leonhard von Keutschach in the 15th century, who also used it as a summer residence. The castle’s importance declined after the toll collection was abolished in the early 19th century.
It passed through several owners and was restored in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Today, it operates as a museum and cultural venue hosting exhibitions about regional history, medieval life, and a landscape museum, while offering visitors a chance to experience its fortified tower, Gothic chapel frescoes, and panoramic alpine views.
