Burg Obervoitsberg
Voitsberg, Austria, Austria
Burg Obervoitsberg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin located in Voitsberg, Styria, Austria, with its origins dating back to 1164 when it was built by Duke Ottokar IV of Styria.
The castle was constructed without the approval of the nearby St. Lambrecht Abbey, leading to later compensation agreements. Serving as a strategic stronghold, Burg Obervoitsberg was used to oversee and control the important route between Graz and Judenburg. Over the centuries, it belonged to various noble families including the Babenbergs and Hanau, and functioned as the seat of a regional court and administrative center.
The castle underwent expansions and fortifications during the Middle Ages to adapt to new military technologies but gradually fell into disrepair by the 18th century.
After being damaged by a lightning strike in 1798, parts of the castle were demolished, and it became a ruin. In the late 19th century, restoration efforts were undertaken by the Graz-Köflach railway and mining company, and the ruins were eventually gifted to the town of Voitsberg. Today, Burg Obervoitsberg remains an important historical landmark that offers panoramic views and serves as a venue for open-air theater performances known as the Burghofspiele.
The castle’s architectural remains include a rectangular layout with fortified living quarters rather than a traditional bergfried tower, a cistern for water supply, and evidence of a northern drawbridge access. Its story reflects the political and military history of the Styrian region through the medieval period to modern times.
