Burg Thalberg
Schlag bei Thalberg, Austria
Burg Thalberg is a well-preserved Romanesque castle located in Schlag bei Thalberg, Styria, Austria, built between 1171 and 1180 by Leopold von Erlach.
The castle complex stretches 90 meters long and 23 meters wide, featuring two massive square towers, a 24-meter-high keep protecting the gatehouse, and 12-meter-high ring walls connecting the towers. Its history includes ownership by the Krumbach family, the Neubergs, and the Jesuits of Graz, among others, and it played a strategic defensive role during conflicts such as the Turkish wars and the Hungarian uprisings.
The structure retains much of its Romanesque architecture, including a late-Gothic chapel on the upper floor. Burg Thalberg served as a refuge for locals during invasions and underwent various restorations, maintaining its status as one of the finest examples of medieval fortifications in Styria. Today, it remains an important historical site reflecting the region’s medieval heritage and architectural legacy.
