Burg Zu Wiener Neustadt
Wiener Neustadt, Austria
Burg zu Wiener Neustadt is a historic castle in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, originally built in the late 12th century to protect the region and the newly founded town. It was constructed using the ransom money paid for the English King Richard the Lionheart.
The castle was built on a swampy area using wooden piles and was expanded and fortified over centuries, especially under the Habsburgs. It served as the residence of Emperor Frederick III in the 15th century and was the birthplace and burial site of Emperor Maximilian I. The castle suffered damage in various conflicts and fires but has been rebuilt and restored.
Since 1752, it has housed the Theresian Military Academy, making it one of the oldest military academies in the world. The castle remains a prominent symbol of the city’s medieval past and imperial history.
