Burgruine Aichelburg
Austria, Austria
Burgruine Aichelburg is a ruined medieval castle located in the Austrian state of Carinthia, near the village of St. Stefan an der Gail in the Hermagor district.
Originally a simple tower mentioned in 1307 as “the tower near Saint Stephen by the Gail,” the site evolved over the centuries into a small fortified residence that later acquired the name Aichelburg, first recorded in 1432. The castle was damaged and partly destroyed during conflicts in the 15th century, rebuilt in the late 15th and early 16th centuries under owners such as Leonhart Platzer and the later noble family “von Aichelburg,” and finally abandoned after a fire in the late 17th century, likely worsened by severe damage from the great Carinthian earthquake of 1690.
Today the remains are a protected monument consisting of fragmented walls and tower bases on a wooded hillside above the Gailtal valley, with occasional views over the surrounding landscape. Though modest in size compared with larger Carinthian castles, Burgruine Aichelburg illustrates the region’s medieval defensive architecture and the fate of many small noble seats that were gradually abandoned, used as stone sources, and eventually left as ruins preserved for their historical value.
