Verified Burgruine Altrosegg

Rosegg, Austria, Austria

Burgruine Altrosegg, also called simply Burg Rosegg or Altrosegg, is a medieval hilltop castle ruin located in the municipality of Rosegg in Carinthia, southern Austria, overlooking the Rosental valley.

It was probably built in the second half of the 12th or early 13th century and became closely associated with the noble Ras (Raser) family, who used it as their main residence until about 1318, when control passed to other noble owners. The castle remained an important stronghold over the following centuries, with archaeological evidence and finds indicating continued use and building activity especially in the 16th and 17th centuries.

It gradually declined and was systematically dismantled in the early 19th century, after which stones from its walls were reused to build the tower of the parish church of Rosegg in 1806. Today the ruins, including the remains of a Romanesque round tower (Bergfried) and parts of the outer ring wall, lie within the grounds of the Rosegg animal park (Tierpark Rosegg), which encompasses the entire castle hill and makes the site freely accessible to visitors.
