Verified Burgruine Dietrichstein

Pretzfeld, Germany, Austria

Burgruine Dietrichstein is the site of a high medieval aristocratic castle located near Pretzfeld in Bavaria, Germany.

The castle, probably built in the second half of the 11th century before the invention of gunpowder, sits on a rocky spur overlooking the Trubach Valley. It has an almost circular layout with natural rock faces providing defense, complemented by a semi-circular moat on one side.

The castle's original builder is unknown, but it might have been connected to the lords of Wiesenthau or the Dietrichstein family from Carinthia, with the name Dietrichstein likely linked to an old tradition of combining a personal name with "stein" meaning rock. The castle has been documented in records dating back to 1355 but was probably already in ruins by then. Key remains include a 17-meter-long outer wall, a 1.5-meter-wide section believed to be part of a tower, and remnants of building foundations.

Excavations have revealed pottery from between the 11th and early 13th centuries, indicating the castle's age. Today, the site is a protected medieval ruin with partial wall restorations, highlighting its historical significance as a fortified noble residence.
