Verified Burgruine Federaun

Villach, Austria, Austria

Burgruine Federaun is the ruin of a medieval hill castle on a steep rock above the village of Federaun in the municipality of Villach, Carinthia, Austria, directly overlooking the historically important long-distance road from Villach to Tarvis that crosses the Gail river below the castle rock.

The castle was built in the late 11th century by the Archbishopric of Bamberg as a strategic fortification to control transit traffic and protect the route, and it was first mentioned in 1311; in the mid-13th century Rudolf von Ras, a noble from Rosegg in the Rosental, seized the castle and used it as a base for robber attacks on Italian trade traffic, prompting Bishop Heinrich of Bamberg in 1255 to expel him and restore Bamberg’s control.

Over time the complex was expanded into an unusually large fortified site with two large “Vorburg” (outer courtyard) areas, and it included a bridge watchtower on a rock above the river that initially served as a road barrier and later became a residential building, while the main late‑12th‑century castle was located in the western part of the heights with later extensions to the east.

The castle probably began to decline before the 17th century, and today only small remnants remain of the main castle’s mighty forward facade, with the most notable surviving features being a beautifully brick-built conical cistern in the courtyard, a well-preserved vault, and a deep defensive trench at the eastern end of the site, all set within a legally protected hill-fort complex.
