Burgruine Glanegg
Glanegg, Austria, Austria
Burgruine Glanegg is a medieval castle ruin in the municipality of Glanegg in Carinthia, Austria, situated in the Glan valley and historically tasked with controlling passage through this narrow stretch of land.
First mentioned in documents in 1121, it is one of the oldest and largest fortifications in Carinthia, ranked as the third-largest historical military complex in the region after Hochosterwitz and Landskron. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands many times among noble families and rulers, was expanded into a substantial castle by Ulrich von Ernau in the 16th century, and later fell into decline after its roofs were removed in the 18th century due to a tax imposed by Emperor Joseph II.
Since the 1990s, the ruin has been revitalized by the local Burgverein Glanegg (castle association), which restored much of the stonework and now uses the site for cultural events, making it both a historic monument and a living venue for visitors in the Glantal.
