Burgruine Gmünd
Austria, Austria
Burgruine Gmünd, also called the Alte Burg Gmünd, is a medieval castle ruin in the town of Gmünd in Kärnten, Carinthia, Austria, standing at about 768 meters above sea level on a hill near the town center.
The castle was built in the mid‑13th century (around 1252) as a fortified military and administrative base that helped protect and develop the nearby market of Gmünd, and it was first mentioned in documents in 1292. Over the centuries it was repeatedly expanded in late‑medieval style, survived attacks by Turkish troops, but was finally destroyed after a long siege by the Hungarians in 1487 and later badly damaged by a major fire in 1886, which left it largely in ruins.
Since the 1950s the town has been restoring and preserving the site; in the 1990s part of the ruins was converted into a restaurant, and the castle grounds now host cultural events, festivals, and concerts, while visitors can climb the remaining towers and walls for panoramic views over Gmünd and the surrounding Gurktal Alps. The Alte Burg is a prominent local landmark and a convenient, picturesque destination for both history visitors and tourists enjoying the scenic landscape of Upper Carinthia.
