Verified Burgruine Gomarn

Bad Sankt Leonhard im Lavanttal, Austria, Austria

Burgruine Gomarn is a medieval castle ruin on a wooded hill to the west of Bad St. Leonhard im Lavanttal in Carinthia, Austria, standing directly at the edge of the town and integrated into the old city wall.

The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1278/1287 and originally developed as a small stronghold around the year 1000, later expanding into a more spacious residence; its most prominent features are the massive square tower (bergfried) and a four-storey main building (palas) with partly preserved stone window frames from the 14th and 15th centuries.

For centuries it belonged to the Bishopric of Bamberg, serving as the administrative seat of the Bamberg land and mining judge, and remained under Bamberg influence until 1759, when all Bamberg estates in Carinthia were sold to the Austrian crown under Maria Theresa. The castle was heavily damaged by fire in 1762, briefly rebuilt, and then destroyed again in 1808, and since it was never reconstructed it has remained a ruin; today the stabilized walls are freely accessible, and the spacious inner courtyard, shaded by a large chestnut tree, is used for summer festivals, castle events, and other local gatherings.

Visitors can walk up to the hill from the town, enjoy views over Bad St. Leonhard and the Lavanttal toward the Koralpe, and explore the atmospheric remains of the towers, walls, and courtyard, which have been carefully maintained and secured by the municipality as a popular regional leisure and cultural site.
