Verified Burgruine Mödling

Mödling, Austria, Austria

Burgruine Mödling is the ruined remains of a large hill castle located just above the town of Mödling in Lower Austria, sitting about 259 metres above sea level on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Mödlingbach valley and offering views toward Mödling and the Hussarentempel in the Wienerwald.

Built in the second half of the 12th century by Heinrich de Medlich, a son of Heinrich II Jasomirgott, the castle became the seat of a local branch of the Babenberg dynasty and grew to be one of the largest castle complexes in Austria in its time, with a prominent guest according to local tradition being the famous Minnesänger Walther von der Vogelweide around 1219.

The fortress was largely destroyed during the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529, later temporarily repaired, and then again ruined by a lightning strike in 1556, after which it was never rebuilt and remained a ruin from the 16th century onward, with some 19th‑century romantic restorations adding to the surviving walls and arches.

Today the site is freely accessible, situated within the Naturpark Föhrenberge, and is reached by a moderate 30–45 minute walk from parking areas in Mödling through pine-covered slopes, making it a popular hiking and history destination for visitors from Vienna and the surrounding region.
