Burgruine Niedertrixen

Burgruine Niedertrixen is a small medieval castle ruin located north of the town of Völkermarkt in Carinthia, Austria, close to the main road and the A2 southern highway.

The site is one of the three historic “Trixen” castles in the area (Obertrixen, Mittertrixen and Niedertrixen), which together formed an important defensive and administrative complex in the Trixen valley, and Niedertrixen originally served as the lower stronghold of this system. Only low remains of the original walls and foundations are still visible today, and the ruin is generally described as modest and fragmented, with little of the original structure standing above ground level.

The ruin lies on a wooded hillside and is accessible via local paths, forming part of a small group of historic fortifications in the Völkermarkt district that includes the more prominent ruins of Mittertrixen and Waisenberg, as well as nearby palaces such as the former Schloss Niedertrixen (also called Tachenstein) at the foot of the hill, which was destroyed by lightning in the 18th century and later rebuilt as a residence. 

Today Burgruine Niedertrixen is a protected monument and a quiet, easily reached hiking spot that gives visitors a tangible link to the medieval fortification network around Völkermarkt without the scale or grandeur of larger Carinthian castles.
