Burgruine Rabenstein
Rabenstein an der Pielach, Austria, Austria
Burgruine Rabenstein is the ruined medieval hill castle in Rabenstein an der Pielach, Lower Austria, situated high above the Pielach River on the wooded Schlossberg (castle hill) and traditionally regarded as the town’s landmark.
The castle was built in the first quarter of the 12th century by Wichard von Rabenstein (called von Hohenstauf) on a rocky spur in the Pielach meander, became a prominent fortress in the Pielachtal, and was besieged for about a month by Ottoman forces in 1683 but not captured, remaining inhabited until the late 18th century when it was abandoned and gradually turned into a ruin.
By the late 20th century the site had deteriorated badly, but from 1989 a dedicated committee formed by the village renewal association and donors restored key elements such as the gate tower, the northern tower, the round Bergfried (keep), and the defensive wall, so that today the ruins are freely accessible via a well-marked hiking path from Rabenstein (about 15 minutes’ walk) and offer pleasant views over the town and valley as a popular local outing spot.
The surrounding ascent follows a forest nature trail that provides information about the flora and landscape of the Pielach Valley, and the site is also used for cultural events such as annual brass-band performances, making Burgruine Rabenstein both a historic monument and a well-integrated element of local recreation and community life.
