“Burgruine Saalegg” refers to at least two different medieval castle ruins in Austria, and the most commonly cited in travel and regional sources is the hilltop ruin in Seis am Schlern (South Tyrol, now part of Italy but historically Austrian), which sits at about 1,219 metres and is often called Ruine Salegg or Saleck and is associated with the nearby Ruine Hauenstein.

This South Tyrolean Saalegg was probably built in the 12th century by the Lords of Saleck, first mentioned in 1148, and later used as a “Ganerbenburg” (a castle shared by several families), passing in the 15th century to the Zwingensteiner and in the 16th century to the Wolkenstein family, before gradually decaying into ruin and eventually being partially cleared, stabilized, and reopened to visitors in 2001–2002.

Another ruin named Saalegg (sometimes spelled Saaleck) exists in Sankt Martin bei Lofer in Salzburg, described as a rock castle near the Lamprechtsofen cave and reachable via a footpath through the “Schlösslwald,” and there is also a well‑known Burg Saaleck in the Saaletal in Saxony, Germany, but the Austrian Saalegg most frequently encountered in historical and tourist contexts is the one in the Schlerngebiet of South Tyrol.

Both Austrian sites are accessible walking destinations where visitors can see remains of walls, towers, and courtyards, with the South Tyrolean Salegg offering a circular trail from the Seiser Alm cable‑car valley station that leads past Salegg, then Hauenstein, and back, while the Saint Martin site is noted for its dramatic rock setting near a famous limestone cave and local legends.
