Burgruine Waisenberg
Austria, Austria
Burgruine Waisenberg is a medieval castle ruin situated on a prominent limestone rock about eleven kilometers northwest of Völkermarkt in Carinthia, Austria, above the small settlement of Waisenberg (slowenian Važenberk).
The name “Waisenberg” itself comes from the castle, and the site today is one of the larger and more dramatic fortifications in the Völkermarkt district, standing isolated on a rocky hill that once offered a strong defensive position over the surrounding valley. The earliest secure documentary mention of the castle dates to the 12th century, and it was built as a fortified seat of the local lords of Waisenberg, who ruled over the nearby Trixen area and played an important role in the region’s medieval power structure.
The castle complex originally consisted of a main ward with a tower (Bergfried), residential buildings and outer walls, and during its history it was expanded and renovated several times before gradually falling into ruin from the 16th century onward.
