Burgruine Weyer
Austria, Austria
Burgruine Weyer, also known as Weyer Castle or Weyerturm, is a ruined medieval castle located in Bramberg am Wildkogel, Salzburg, Austria, situated at about 816 meters above sea level.
The castle dates back to at least 1130 and was first associated with Rapoto de Wiare. It served as a defensive structure guarding the entrance to Habachtal valley, historically important for containing Europe's only emerald deposits.
The ruins feature the main Weyerturm tower standing about 16 meters tall, with remnants of a Romanesque chapel and foundation walls of a connected square building. From 1270, the castle belonged to the Bishopric of Chiemsee, with tenants required to accommodate visiting bishops.
During World War II, nearby buildings stored artworks from Vienna’s Museum of Art History for protection. Burgruine Weyer remains a significant historic site, exemplifying regional medieval military architecture and is surrounded by other cultural landmarksBurgruine Weyer.
