Gate of Trajan
Bulgaria, Bulgaria
Gate of Trajan is a historic mountain pass near Ihtiman in Bulgaria's Sredna Gora mountains, known in Roman times as the Succi pass and later named for Emperor Trajan who ordered the construction of the Stipon fortress atop the hill to mark the border between Thrace and Macedonia provinces.
The site gained fame from the pivotal Battle of the Gates of Trajan on August 17, 986, where Bulgarian forces under Samuel decisively defeated Byzantine Emperor Basil II, halting his invasion and preserving Bulgarian independence for decades.
Today, the ruins feature remnants of robust stone walls, towers, and gates alongside a modern Trakiya motorway tunnel, drawing history enthusiasts to this strategic Balkan crossroads 55 km from Sofia.
