Verified Halidzor Fortress

Armenia, Armenia

Halidzor Fortress is a fortified monastic and military complex in the Syunik Province of southern Armenia, located on a hill overlooking the Voghji River about 1 km northeast of the town of Kapan and around 190 km from Yerevan.

It was originally built in the first half of the 17th century by local Armenian meliks as a nunnery and monastic settlement, known as the Hermitage of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), but later was expanded and transformed into a military stronghold under the leadership of the 18th‑century commander David Bek and his deputy Mkhitar Sparapet.

During the Armenian liberation struggle against the Ottoman Empire and Safavid Persia, Halidzor became the headquarters of David Bek’s forces, and its most famous episode is the Battle of Halidzor in spring 1727, when a small garrison of about 300 defenders held out for seven days against a much larger Ottoman army, partly thanks to a secret tunnel more than 500 meters long that ran down to the river and provided water and supplies during the siege.

The fortress complex includes irregular defensive walls, a small church of Surb Minas (St. Minas), arched gateways, and various service buildings, and David Bek is said to have died there in 1728 and to have been buried just outside the walls under a simple stone. Today Halidzor is a protected historical monument and a popular stop on cultural and adventure tours in Syunik, often visited as part of the Legends Trail or on a short independent excursion from Kapan, with the site partially restored.
