Hohenwang Castle in Langenwang, Styria, dates back to the 12th century and was one of the region’s most significant medieval fortifications, serving as a local administrative center and refuge during crises. The elongated complex stretches about 90 meters along a rocky spur, consisting of a stronghold and two outworks separated by deep trenches and protected by multiple gates and steep cliffs.

Its Romanesque core was expanded from the 13th to the 17th century with a palas, gallery, bastion and gatehouse, and housed a chapel, great hall, vaulted stables and storage cellars.

Severe damage from an earthquake in the late 18th century and Allied bombing in World War II left much in ruins, but preserved sections of the shield wall, main gate and perimeter walls have been stabilized and partly restored over the past decades by a local preservation association. Visitors can still reach the site via marked forest trails and enjoy limited views across the Mürz Valley from the high rocky outcrop.
