Isabela Island
Ecuador, Ecuador
Isabela Island is the largest island in Ecuador’s Galápagos archipelago, a seahorse-shaped landmass in the western islands formed by the merging of six large shield volcanoes, most of which remain active.
Covering roughly 4,600–4,700 square kilometers and straddling the equator, it rises to about 1,700 meters at Wolf Volcano and hosts diverse habitats ranging from stark lava fields and arid coasts to humid highlands.
Despite its size, it has only around 2,000 residents, mainly in the small port town of Puerto Villamil, and is known for rich wildlife including marine iguanas, Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants, giant tortoises, and abundant marine life that make it a prime destination for hiking, snorkeling, and observing evolution in action.
