Verified Kipilovo Fortress

Bulgaria, Bulgaria

Kipilovo Fortress, also known as Kipilovsko Kale, is a ruined Byzantine military fortress located on Mount Hisarlaka in the Balkan Mountains, about 3.4 km south of the village of Kipilovo in central Bulgaria.

It was built in the late 6th century by the Byzantine Empire to help defend Constantinople from northern attacks and remained in use until the period of the Second Bulgarian Empire, forming part of a wider defensive system along the mountain ridge. The fortress has an irregular trapezoidal shape, is about 181 m long and up to 59 m wide, covers roughly 8,000 square metres, and was constructed using the opus mixtum technique with walls up to 2.5 m thick and in places 8–10 m high.

Inside the enclosure there are remains of buildings in the northwest, likely dwellings for guards, small water reservoirs cut into the rock, a possible chapel or small church in the middle, and three well-preserved entrances along the stone road that once led to the main gate. Today the site is overgrown with trees and shrubs, offering a quiet, elevated position with views over the surrounding landscape, and it is accessible as a hiking destination for those interested in early medieval fortifications and Byzantine history in Bulgaria.
