Kond is the oldest historic quarter of Yerevan, Armenia, a densely built hilltop neighborhood in the city’s Kentron district famous for its narrow, steep, winding streets, traditional stone houses, and a sense of time that feels separate from the modern city center.

The name “Kond” means “long hill” or “rounded hill” in Armenian, and during Persian rule the area was called Tabbabash (or Tepebashi), a direct translation of the same idea, reflecting its elevated position on the western slopes of the old city near the Hrazdan River. Originally established in the 17th century as one of Yerevan’s three original quarters along with Hin Tagh (the Old City) and Karahank, Kond was populated mainly by indigenous Armenians and later came under the rule of the Geghamian family of meliks, local nobles who presided over the area during the Persian period.

The district’s architecture developed organically, with mostly single‑story earthen houses interconnected by shared courtyards, arched doorways, and stair‑like levels that descend from the hillside, creating a maze‑like urban fabric that is still largely unchanged since the 18th century.
