Verified Kreuzenstein Castle

Leobendorf, Austria, Austria

Kreuzenstein Castle (Burg Kreuzenstein) is a striking hilltop castle near Leobendorf in Lower Austria, just north of Vienna, that looks like a medieval fortress but is essentially a romantic 19th‑century reconstruction built on the ruins of an original 12th‑century castle destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War.

Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek, who acquired the estate in 1702 and later rebuilt it with money from the family’s Silesian coal mines, directed the reconstruction from 1874 onward, using money from the Wilczek family’s large Silesian coal mines, and deliberately assembled authentic medieval architectural fragments, doors, windows, and furnishings that he had purchased from many parts of Europe, giving the castle a unique blend of revived medieval parts and 19th‑century design so that it can be seen as both a “neo‑medieval” and an “original‑medieval” structure.

The castle was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century, originally built by the Counts of Formbach, passed through marriage to the Counts of Wasserburg, later belonged to the Habsburgs for over 250 years, and was finally taken over by Swedish troops near the end of the Thirty Years’ War, who blew it up before retreating, leaving it a ruin until the Wilczek family’s reconstruction project.
