Lovech Fortress

Lovech, Bulgaria, Bulgaria

Lovech Fortress is a medieval stronghold in the old part of Lovech, built mainly in the 9th and 10th centuries on the hill of Hisarya. It became famous in 1187, when a failed Byzantine siege helped mark the restoration of the Bulgarian state and the start of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The fortress later remained an important defensive and urban center, and today its restored ruins are a popular historic landmark with wide views over the town.
