Lyutitsa
Bulgaria, Bulgaria
Lyutitsa is one of Bulgaria's largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses, located in the eastern Rhodopes mountains 5 km southwest of Ivaylovgrad near the Turkish border.
Known as the "Marble City" for its striking white marble walls reaching 10 meters high, this elliptical stronghold spanning 26,000 square meters dates primarily to the 4th-6th centuries with major expansions during the First and Second Bulgarian Empires, serving as a bishopric center through the 18th century.
Featuring 12 towers (eight preserved), two excavated churches, a necropolis, and artifacts like rare coins and Preslav ceramics, it played key roles under Tsar Kaloyan and fell into decline as residents moved to nearby mineral springs.
