Markeli
Bulgaria, Bulgaria
Markeli is a major medieval fortress ruin in Karnobat Municipality, Burgas Province, Bulgaria, strategically positioned south of the Balkan Mountains as a frontier stronghold between the First Bulgarian Empire and Byzantium.
Gaining prominence from the late 7th century, it frequently changed hands and hosted pivotal battles, including the 756 victory of Byzantine Emperor Constantine V over Bulgarian ruler Vineh, and the decisive 792 Battle of Marcellae where Bulgarian Khan Kardam routed Constantine VI's forces.
In 811, it served as the staging point for Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros I's failed invasion, ending in his death at the hands of Khan Krum in the Battle of Pliska. Abandoned by the 12th century after Latin Emperor Henry of Flanders destroyed it in 1207, the site preserves walls, towers, and a Bulgarian church from Tsar Simeon I's era, now drawing visitors for reenactments and hikes.
